A couple days ago as I got in my neighborhood on my way home from work, I noticed a truck behind me with a couple large flags flapping behind it. One was the American flag, and the other was a white flag I couldn’t make out. When I turned onto another street, I could see in my rearview it was a Trump 2024 flag. ***huge eye-roll*** Anyway, It got me thinking about the American Flag.

When I was a kid, the flag was something special. It was on the flagpole at school, raised before the football or baseball game, hanging from front porches on Memorial Day and the 4th of July, and at military funerals. But, It seems cheaper and less about America today. It’s more of a commercialized political prop. It’s been modified to include cartoon skulls, guns, police themes, and various other political statements. It’s on bikinis and dog sweaters and flies over more dangling pairs of Truk Nutz than post offices.

When the hoard of treasonists stormed the US Capitol to try to stop the operation of our democracy on January 6th, they waved the flag as if they had no idea what it was supposed to stand for. The ones with the confederate flag waved a much more fitting symbol for their intentions that day.

I wish people would quit worshiping a piece of cloth at the cost of reducing its significance and read the Constitution to understand what America actually means. There’s a lot more in that document than just the 2nd amendment, and freedom is for everybody whether or not they look or think like you.
